In the Naruto universe, power isn’t always measured by chakra volume or physical strength. Two clans changed that. The Uchiha and the Hyuga each carry a bloodline ability in their very eyes — a Kekkei Genkai passed from generation to generation without any possibility of being learned from the outside. These are dojutsu: eye-based techniques that reshape how a shinobi reads the world and fights in it.
The Sharingan belongs to the Uchiha. It awakens through grief, love, and loss. Once active, it reads movement before the body executes it, copies jutsu on sight, and casts genjutsu through nothing more than eye contact. In its advanced stages — the Mangekyo Sharingan — it grants abilities that can level landscapes and trap opponents inside inescapable illusions. The Sharingan can even evolve further, toward the Rinnegan, the most powerful eye in the series.
This guide covers both eyes in full: origins, abilities, evolution stages, strengths, weaknesses, and how they hold up against each other in direct confrontation. The Naruto Toys lineup includes officially licensed kits for Naruto characters including Sasuke Uchiha. Browse the full collection.

What Are Dojutsu?

Dojutsu are Kekkei Genkai manifested through the eyes. They cannot be learned through training. You carry the bloodline or you don’t. Kakashi’s transplanted Sharingan is an exception — and even he couldn’t turn it off without draining himself. More background at the Naruto Fandom dojutsu page.

Why the Uchiha and Hyuga carry these eyes
The Uchiha descend from Indra Ōtsutsuki, Hagoromo’s eldest son. The Sharingan grew from the spiritual side of Hagoromo’s power. The Hyuga descend from Hamura, Hagoromo’s brother. Hamura had the Byakugan, and lore suggests his chakra was equal to Hagoromo’s. These aren’t random bloodlines — both trace directly to divine origin.
The Uchiha are cursed by emotion. Their power grows through love turned to grief. The Hyuga are burdened by secrecy. Their clan is divided into a Main House and a Branch House, with the Branch House members bearing a seal that destroys the Byakugan on death to prevent it being taken. Two powerful clans, two very different relationships with their own eyes.
The Sharingan — Uchiha Clan

The Sharingan requires an emotional trigger to first awaken. Once active, it’s under voluntary control. It doesn’t drain the user just by being open in its basic form. The drain comes later, with the Mangekyo.

Full Sharingan ability set
- Jutsu copying — the Sharingan records ninjutsu, genjutsu, and taijutsu on observation. Cannot copy kekkei genkai or secret hiden techniques. Kakashi Hatake used this to accumulate over a thousand techniques.
- Predictive vision — reads micro-movements in the opponent’s muscles, stance, and chakra pathways. Gives a fraction-of-a-second anticipation advantage. The body still needs to be physically fast enough to respond.
- Genjutsu: Sharingan — casts illusions through eye contact. Available to all Sharingan users at 3-tomoe. Itachi’s Tsukuyomi places the victim in a mental prison where he controls the passage of time.
- Chakra perception — sees chakra at a functional combat level. Can identify chakra types and detect hidden techniques in approaching attacks.
- Amaterasu (Mangekyo) — black flames that don’t extinguish until they consume the target. Itachi ignites with his left eye; Sasuke extinguishes and shapes with his right.
- Tsukuyomi (Mangekyo) — Itachi’s personal Mangekyo ability. Traps the target in a mental world where Itachi controls time, subjecting them to decades of experience in seconds.
- Susanoo (Mangekyo) — a colossal chakra avatar that surrounds the user. Acts as both weapon and absolute defense. Drains life force with sustained use.
- Kamui (Mangekyo, Kakashi/Obito) — dimensional warping. Obito phases through objects; Kakashi teleports targets to another dimension.
- Izanagi — forbidden kinjutsu. Rewrites reality for the user for a moment — reverting death or injury. Permanently blinds the eye used.
- Izanami — traps the target in a looping illusion of their own actions until they accept reality. Also blinds the eye used.
The Byakugan — Hyuga Clan

The Byakugan predates the Sharingan in the series’ lore. Hamura Ōtsutsuki carried it, and he was Hagoromo’s equal. Most Hyuga are born with it active, or develop it without trauma. Full ability documentation at the Naruto Wiki — Byakugan.
Core Byakugan abilities
- 360° near-complete vision — sees in all directions simultaneously. The one blind spot sits at the back of the neck above the first thoracic vertebra. Even this blind spot is nearly impossible to exploit in practical combat — only Neji’s match against Naruto showed this used deliberately.
- Chakra pathway system (detailed) — the Byakugan reads every node of the Chakra Pathway System with precision the Sharingan cannot match. The Sharingan sees chakra at a surface level. The Byakugan reads it microscopically.
- Tenketsu point vision — sees all 361 tenketsu pressure points in an opponent’s body. These are the valves that control chakra flow throughout the system.
- X-ray and long-range sight — sees through walls, smoke, underground, and at distances of several kilometres with sufficient training. Hinata tracked Naruto through obstacles multiple times.
- Gentle Fist integration — the Hyuga fighting style built around Byakugan precision. Strikes inject chakra into the opponent’s tenketsu to seal them. A sealed tenketsu shuts down chakra in that area. Multiple sealed points disable jutsu use entirely.
- Eight Trigrams Rotation — absolute defense. The user releases chakra from all tenketsu simultaneously while spinning. Creates an impenetrable sphere. Repels almost everything that meets it.
- No activation cost — the Byakugan has no blindness risk, no trauma requirement, no life drain. What it offers, it offers consistently every fight.
Advanced Byakugan abilities (Otsutsuki users)
|
Ability |
User |
Detail |
|
Mind reading |
Kaguya Ōtsutsuki |
Could read the thoughts of others directly through the Byakugan. Not reproduced by any Hyuga user in the series. |
|
Fate reading |
Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki |
Used the Byakugan to read the future fates of people. Unique to Momoshiki. |
|
Tenseigan |
Ōtsutsuki clan (Toneri) |
Evolved state when Byakugan combines with Ōtsutsuki chakra. Grants moon-level destructive power. Pure Hyuga cannot access this. |
|
Combat dominance |
Kaguya (vs Sasuke's Rinnegan) |
Kaguya used the Byakugan to outmaneuver Rinnegan Sasuke during their final confrontation. Demonstrates the eye’s ceiling is much higher than its narrative portrayal suggests. |
Five-Round Comparison

A side-by-side breakdown per category. Comparative analysis draws from both the CBR breakdown and established series lore.
|
Round |
🔴 Sharingan |
⚪ Byakugan |
Win |
|
1. Offense |
Genjutsu alone ends most 1v1 fights. Amaterasu, Susanoo, and a near-infinite jutsu library give the Sharingan devastating offensive range. |
Gentle Fist is fatal in close range but requires proximity. No genjutsu. No long-range elemental attacks at base level. |
Sharingan |
|
2. Defense |
Susanoo is the most powerful single-user shield in the series. The caveat: it’s Mangekyo-only and actively burns the user’s life force. |
Eight Trigrams Rotation is available to any trained Hyuga, has no activation cost, and creates a genuinely impenetrable sphere. |
Byakugan |
|
3. Recon |
Reads technique structure well. Can identify chakra types mid-fight. Useful for adapting strategy on the fly. |
Sees kilometres in range, through objects, underground. Detects hidden enemies, traps, and ambient chakra. No specialist recon eye comes close. |
Byakugan |
|
4. Growth |
3-Tomoe → Mangekyo → Eternal Mangekyo → Rinnegan. Each stage is a massive jump. The ceiling is literally godhood. |
Standard Hyuga Byakugan stays the Byakugan. Tenseigan requires Ōtsutsuki genes. Strong and consistent, but not escalating. |
Sharingan |
|
5. Reliability |
Mangekyo causes progressive blindness. Awakening requires severe loss. Susanoo drains health. High power, high cost. |
No blindness. No trauma requirement. No health drain at base level. Works the same in every fight. Dependability is its defining trait. |
Byakugan |
Who Wins in a Fight? Scenario Analysis

The honest answer is that it depends entirely on which stage of each eye is in play and which user is holding it. Here’s how the most plausible matchups break down.
|
Matchup |
Probable outcome |
Deciding factor |
|
3-Tomoe Sasuke vs Chunin Exams Neji |
Narrow Sharingan advantage. Sasuke’s genjutsu is the decisive edge. Neji can recognize genjutsu but breaking it actively requires disrupting his own chakra flow — technically possible with Gentle Fist but difficult. |
Genjutsu vs Gentle Fist counter. Juken can disrupt chakra flow to break illusions, but execution under active genjutsu is the key unknown. |
|
Mangekyo Sasuke vs any base Hyuga |
Sharingan decisively. Amaterasu, Susanoo, and Kamui operate in a different power tier from base Byakugan users. No single base Hyuga technique matches Mangekyo-level output. |
The gap between base Sharingan and Mangekyo is enormous. The Byakugan doesn’t have a comparable escalation path at the base level. |
|
Pure taijutsu (no genjutsu, no Mangekyo) |
Byakugan wins. Gentle Fist destroys chakra flow from the inside. A Sharingan user reads every incoming strike but still gets hit in the tenketsu. |
Sasuke himself acknowledged Neji’s Eight Trigrams as the perfect defense. Reading attacks perfectly doesn’t help if you can’t physically avoid Gentle Fist. |
|
Kaguya’s Byakugan vs Rinnegan Sasuke |
Kaguya wins. She used the Byakugan to outmaneuver Sasuke in their final battle. Demonstrates the Byakugan’s ceiling in Ōtsutsuki hands goes far beyond what the narrative gave ordinary Hyuga. |
The series underplays the Byakugan’s true ceiling. Kishimoto’s storytelling favored the Uchiha, not the lore. |
|
Medical ninjutsu support role |
Sharingan has limited advantage here. Useful for reading enemy technique structure but not a dedicated healing tool. |
Byakugan wins clearly. Reads internal injury and chakra disruption with diagnostic precision. Why Tsunade’s students and medical-nin value Hyuga on missions. |
The Byakugan in the Boruto Era

Can Boruto use Byakugan?
Boruto Uzumaki does not use a standard Byakugan. He carries a different eye called the Jogan — a manifestation of his Uzumaki and Hyuga bloodlines mixing with the influence of the Otsutsuki Karma seal. His mother is Hinata Hyuga, so the Byakugan genes are definitely present. But the Jogan is not the same eye.

|
Clan source |
Hamura Ōtsutsuki → Hyuga lineage |
Mixed: Uzumaki + Hyuga + Otsutsuki influence |
Himawari and the Hyuga legacy
Boruto’s younger sister Himawari has awakened a standard Byakugan. Her activation came involuntarily at age three when she reached a high emotional state — demonstrating the Hyuga bloodline is still fully potent in the next generation. Neji Hyuga remained one of the strongest examples of the eye’s ceiling in trained human hands. Hinata’s Byakugan is strong enough to function in Kage-level engagements. The eye isn’t fading.
Is the Byakugan Older Than the Sharingan?

Yes. Hamura Ōtsutsuki possessed the Byakugan, and Hamura was Hagoromo’s brother — predating the Uchiha clan by generations. The Sharingan appeared later, through Indra Ōtsutsuki, who was Hagoromo’s son. So the Byakugan is the older eye by direct lineage.
This matters for the debate about which eye is “stronger” in the lore. Hamura was stated to be Hagoromo’s equal. That means the Byakugan’s original user was at the same level as the man whose power eventually produced the Rinnegan. Kishimoto didn’t give the Hyuga clan that same narrative ceiling, but the lore argument is there.
Naruto Collector Kits
Blokees produces officially licensed Naruto kits for key characters from both sides of this rivalry. The Naruto Champion Class lineup covers the main cast across both Naruto and Shippuden.
The Sasuke Uchiha Champion Class kit features anime-accurate detailing, interchangeable face sculpts, multiple hand parts, and weapon accessories. The Naruto Uzumaki Champion Class kit includes 103 pieces, 22 articulation points, Rasenshuriken, Rasengan, and a dedicated display stand. Both are officially licensed, ages 14+.
Conclusion
The Sharingan wins on offensive power, escalation potential, and story prominence. The Byakugan wins on consistency, reconnaissance, and surgical precision. Neither eye is objectively weaker — they were designed as opposing philosophies, not a hierarchy.
Base Sharingan vs base Byakugan is genuinely debatable. The moment Mangekyo powers enter the equation, the Sharingan pulls ahead. But the Byakugan offers something the Sharingan never does at that level: reliability with no cost.

FAQs
Is Sharingan stronger than Byakugan?
In a high-level head-to-head battle with all abilities available, the Mangekyo Sharingan is generally considered more powerful. The Sharingan’s genjutsu capability can end fights before a single physical blow lands, and abilities like Amaterasu, Susanoo, and Kamui operate in a tier the standard Byakugan cannot match.
What is the 3 great dojutsu?
The three great dojutsu are the Sharingan, the Byakugan, and the Rinnegan. All three trace their origin back to Kaguya Ōtsutsuki and her sons — Hagoromo (whose lineage produced the Sharingan through Indra) and Hamura (whose lineage produced the Byakugan through the Hyuga). The Rinnegan is the rarest of the three, appearing only when the chakra of both Hagoromo’s sons — Indra’s and Asura’s — combine in a single person.
Is Byakugan the weakest eye?
No. The Byakugan is often perceived as the least powerful of the three great dojutsu, but this is partly a storytelling bias rather than a lore verdict. Kishimoto consistently gave more screen time and power escalation to the Sharingan, which skewed the narrative comparison.
Who is stronger, Hyuga or Uchiha?
As a clan, the Uchiha produced more individually catastrophic shinobi. Madara Uchiha challenged entire armies. Sasuke Uchiha reached godlike power by the end of Shippuden. Itachi is considered by many to be the most tactically brilliant shinobi in the series. The Sharingan’s escalation path from 3-Tomoe to Mangekyo to Rinnegan produces once-in-a-generation fighters.
The Hyuga, by contrast, are the most consistently elite clan in the Hidden Leaf. Their floor is extremely high — even average Hyuga members are formidable jonin-level fighters. The Uchiha peaks higher; the Hyuga floors higher. In an all-out war between the two full clans at comparable numbers, the outcome would be genuinely uncertain.
Can Boruto use Byakugan?
Boruto Uzumaki does not use a standard Byakugan. He possesses a different eye called the Jogan, which shares some traits with the Byakugan — notably the ability to see chakra pathways and chakra flow — but also includes dimensional perception and unique abilities that the Byakugan doesn’t have.
Who is the last pure Uchiha?
Sasuke Uchiha is the last surviving member of the main Uchiha bloodline following the Uchiha massacre. His daughter Sarada Uchiha carries the lineage forward and has successfully awakened her own Sharingan, making her the next confirmed Sharingan user from the Uchiha clan.
What is the rarest Sharingan?
The Rinnegan is the rarest eye in the Sharingan lineage — though technically it is often classified as a separate dojutsu rather than simply an evolved Sharingan. It appears only when the chakra of both Indra Ōtsutsuki’s and Asura Ōtsutsuki’s descendants combine in a single individual.
Within the Mangekyo Sharingan tier, every user awakens a unique pattern. The Mangekyo’s rarest individual forms are those that grant dimensional abilities like Kamui. Itachi’s pairing of Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu is also considered exceptionally rare because he manifested two distinct and fully developed Mangekyo abilities, one in each eye. Among all Mangekyo users in the series, only a handful achieved that level of control.
Is the Byakugan older than the Sharingan?
Yes. The Byakugan is the older of the two eyes by direct lineage. Hamura Ōtsutsuki possessed the Byakugan, and Hamura was Hagoromo’s brother — both were Kaguya’s sons. The Sharingan appeared later, through Indra Ōtsutsuki, who was Hagoromo’s son and therefore Hamura’s nephew.
What are the types of Sharingan?
There are six main stages: the 1-Tomoe Sharingan (first awakening, basic chakra perception), 2-Tomoe Sharingan (improved prediction, early genjutsu), and 3-Tomoe Sharingan (fully mature, jutsu copying, full genjutsu capability). These are followed by the Mangekyo Sharingan, which awakens through the loss of a loved one and grants a unique ability per user, such as Tsukuyomi, Amaterasu, or Kamui.
What is Sasuke’s Sharingan called?
Sasuke’s Sharingan has evolved through multiple stages across the series. He first awakened it as a child, progressing to 3-Tomoe during the Chunin Exams arc. He later awakened the Mangekyo Sharingan after the death of Itachi, gaining Amaterasu in his right eye and the ability to shape and extinguish Amaterasu in his left.
He then transplanted Itachi’s eyes to achieve the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, eliminating the risk of blindness. During the Fourth Great Ninja War, after receiving power from Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, Sasuke’s left eye evolved into the Rinnegan, giving him access to Six Paths abilities including his own pattern of Chibaku Tensei and the Amenotejikara dimensional shift.
